New Norton RazorStar abrasive belts with high-performance ceramic grain

A new high-performance ceramic grain in the Norton RazorStar abrasive belts ensures improved stock removal, longer service life and cooler grinding thanks to a special coating. The grain developed by Saint-Gobain enables razor-sharp grinding, significantly faster cutting and higher material removal.
Improved grinding performance, longer tool life and cooler grinding ensure that the new Norton RazorStar high-performance abrasive belts deliver unsurpassed stock removal, higher workpiece quality, reduced energy consumption, less waste and therefore lower process costs. "The new high-performance ceramic grain represents the latest grain technology and is characterized by unparalleled grinding performance," says Dr. Alexander Nashed, Senior Research Engineer at Saint-Gobain Abrasives' European Grinding Technology Centre in Norderstedt. "In contrast to conventional ceramic grain, the edges of the grains of the RazorStar abrasive belts consist of two linear areas that combine to form razor-sharp points. These points guarantee optimum stock removal right from the start and chip the metal throughout the service life of the abrasive belt. The innovative grit geometry with corresponding microstructure enables each grit to be broken into uniform, sharp structures during sanding. This ensures optimum stock removal performance throughout the entire service life of the belt." According to the manufacturer, the new technology also offers an unprecedentedly high proportion of ceramic grains arranged upright on the backing. This not only achieves particularly efficient and high material removal, but also ensures a particularly homogeneous sanding pattern on the surface. This significantly reduces further time-consuming reworking. Combined with the high grit density, the adapted bonding system and the robust polyester backing, the holding capacity of the grits and the ability to form new sharp sanding edges at medium to high pressure are promoted.
In addition to improved sanding performance and a longer service life, RazorStar also ensures cooler sanding. To achieve this, the sharp-edged grain is supplemented by a special coating that significantly reduces heat generation during the sanding process. The coating acts in a similar way to a coolant. In this way, thermal damage to the workpiece can be prevented. Thanks to the excellent cutting performance, the sanding process is significantly faster than with conventional ceramic grit. The time saved has a positive effect on energy consumption and costs. Another advantage: Thanks to the longer service life of the RazorStar abrasive belts, their consumption and thus the volume of abrasive belts to be disposed of can be significantly reduced. Norton RazorStar belts are suitable for medium to high removal rates, both for manual applications and for machine-controlled or fully automated sanding processes.
