SKZ: Testing the Long-Term Durability of Coatings

The method combines a precise replication of the natural solar spectrum with high irradiance, as well as frequent and intense humidity cycles. This is intended to realistically simulate actual weathering effects and accelerate aging processes. Meanwhile, this testing method is also gaining importance for coatings in the aerospace and construction industries, as well as other industrial applications.
Combining Weathering Testing and Coating Development
At SKZ, the independent testing laboratory of SKZ-Testing GmbH conducts standard-compliant weathering tests. In addition, the European Center for Dispersion Technologies (EZD) in Selb supports companies in the development and optimization of coatings. Using analytical methods, changes in the material can be investigated and, for example, potential for optimization in binders, pigments, or additives can be identified. Thus, the joint offering ranges from the formulation and characterization of new coatings to the verification of their long-term durability in accordance with ASTM D7869. The combination of materials development, analytics, and independent weathering testing is intended, in particular, to help better understand aging mechanisms and shorten development processes.
