Henkel Adhesive Technologies is expanding its Paper Coatings portfolio with new water-based barrier and heat-seal coatings. The solutions are designed to functionally enhance paper-based packaging and strengthen design-for-recycling approaches.

Brand owners and packaging manufacturers are switching to sustainable and, above all, recyclable solutions for paper packaging. With reliable heat-seal coatings for paper, Henkel is opening up numerous application possibilities for paper-based packaging where plastic solutions were previously often the standard. These primarily include formats that require a sealed seam - such as bags, sachets or shipping packaging for small parts such as screws and toys as well as (dried) food and hygiene products. Heat seals enable a reliable thermal bond on suitable papers. The new solutions in the Henkel Paper Coatings portfolio enable this performance even at low temperatures and high line speeds. They are also repulpable, recyclable and approved for food contact in accordance with FDA and EU regulations. For increased process reliability in the application, a UV tracer version is also available, which is used for application control and quality management.

Paper-based packaging with barrier coatings

Depending on the area of application of the paper packaging, the focus is not only on efficient and secure sealing, but also on protecting the contents with functional barriers. Barrier coatings open up central protective functions for fiber-based packaging and thus fields of application that previously often required plastic or multi-layer composites. Depending on the design, they offer the necessary resistance to grease, water and moisture and at the same time enable reliable heat sealability. In response to increasing market demand, Henkel has expanded and optimized its portfolio to provide coating solutions that deliver reliable barrier performance for primary and secondary packaging. They can be easily integrated into common coating and packaging processes, are repulpable and recyclable. "With our expanded paper coatings portfolio, we enable paper-based packaging that meets current market requirements. With the necessary barrier and sealing properties for numerous applications in the food and non-food sectors, we not only support the transition to recyclable packaging solutions, but also help users to achieve their sustainability goals in line with the PPWR," says Dr. Arianna Savini, Market Strategy Manager Paper Packaging Europe at Henkel Adhesive Technologies.
