Henkel Color-TOC: New shades for thin-film technology

Henkel is introducing a color variant of its organic thin-film technology for metal surfaces, the so-called Thin Organic Coating (TOC). It combines proven properties of the technology in corrosion protection with aesthetic advantages, particularly in the coil coating process.
Color TOC from Henkel extends the classic TOC technologies and represents an important innovation: It offers the possibility of integrating specific colors on coil surfaces. In the pilot project, a golden variant was developed that is specially tailored to the requirements of a key customer from the construction industry. This color variant contributes to differentiation and brand identification, as TOC coatings in their classic form are clear and transparent, which makes clear brand identification difficult. The introduction of a golden yellow shimmer not only improves visual differentiation, but also helps to authenticate products and protects against counterfeiting.
Extended color spectrum for TOC coating
The excellent corrosion protection of the Color TOC ensures the durability of the coated surfaces under extreme conditions. The low coating thickness enables efficient use of resources. The coating can also be easily integrated into existing production processes without the need for extensive modifications. It can be processed using standard application technologies, which increases its flexibility and adaptability. The excellent moisture and water resistance also offers long-term protection. The uniform coating not only improves aesthetics, but also ensures consistent gloss and color stability. Unlike traditional clear TOC, Color TOC provides a uniform gloss and color nuance that further optimizes the visual impact. "In addition to the custom gold shimmer variant, we have also developed prototypes in other colors, including bright green, red, blue and brown, based on the Color TOC product. These colors can be further customized according to customer requirements to meet the exact needs of our partners," explains Dipak Chaudhari, Product Development Manager IMEA for Industrials at Henkel.
Thin Organic Coating especially for coil coating processes
Thin Organic Coating is a hybrid coating system that combines passivation with organic polymers and is used particularly in coil coating processes. It provides excellent adhesion, integrated corrosion protection, anti-fingering properties and lubricity for metal strips coated with zinc, aluminum-zinc or zinc-magnesium-aluminum. Compared to traditional passivation or primer systems, TOC allows a thinner coating thickness of 1 to 2 micrometers without compromising performance. This technology efficiently protects metal surfaces while conserving material resources and promoting sustainability.
