Fraunhofer Vision organizes practical seminar on surface inspection

On December 3 and 4, 2025, the Fraunhofer Vision business unit is organizing the seminar and practical course "Inspection and characterization of surfaces with image processing.
The surface quality of components and products plays a central role in many branches of industry. The requirements for reliable and reproducible inspection methods are correspondingly high. Machine vision systems have established themselves as a key technology here, as they offer efficient tools that in many cases enable fast, production-integrated 100% inspection and the implementation of zero-defect concepts. Modern systems enable the automated detection of defects such as scratches, cracks, pores, inclusions or soiling, even on colored, patterned, transparent, highly reflective or mirrored surfaces. In addition to the classic methods for surface inspection, the seminar will describe suitable optics, camera and lighting techniques, including light field technologies, for example, as well as software-supported methods for defect classification. However, 3D surface measurement techniques for characterizing micro- and nanostructures on surfaces will also be presented. Participants will gain comprehensive practical insights into the state of the art, in which the possibilities and limitations of relevant methods for industrial applications will be demonstrated.
Content of the seminar on surface inspection
The seminar consists of theory and practice. In the first, theoretical part, after an introduction to image acquisition and lighting techniques and the structure of surface inspection systems, typical methods for recording and evaluating or analyzing image and measurement data are presented and an overview of practical applications is given. As part of the practical part, various surface inspection systems are available, which can be used to gain personal experience in small groups. In the discussion with the practical supervisors, individual questions regarding the participants' own application can be clarified, e.g. on the basis of samples submitted in advance by the participants.
