The seminar "Inspection and Characterization of Surfaces with Image Processing" on November 27 and 28, 2024 will provide expert knowledge on surface inspection technology and provide information on its possible applications in industrial quality assurance. It is organized by the Fraunhofer Vision business unit and takes place at the Fraunhofer IOSB in Karlsruhe.

Innovative optical measurement and inspection technologies have established themselves as powerful tools for industrial quality assurance in a wide range of applications over many years. A classic area of application is the inspection of surfaces. The focus here is on high-precision and detailed evaluation of textures on colored, structured, transparent or reflective surfaces, often under real-time requirements. Another key area of application is 3D surface measurement technology for characterizing micro- and nanostructures. The trend is towards production-integrated systems for fast, automatic 100% inspection and the implementation of zero-defect concepts. The aim of the practical seminar on surface inspection is to provide participants with comprehensive insights into the state of the art, to objectively demonstrate the possibilities and current limitations of relevant processes for industrial applications and thus to give them a realistic idea of how to tackle their own inspection tasks.

The seminar consists of theory and practice. In the first, theoretical part, after an introduction to image acquisition and the structure of surface inspection systems, typical methods for recording and evaluating or analyzing image and measurement data are presented and an overview of practical applications is given. As part of the practical part, various surface inspection systems are available, which can be used to gain personal experience in small groups. In the discussion with the practical supervisors, individual questions regarding their own application can be clarified, e.g. on the basis of samples submitted in advance by the participants.
