Summer School on Electrochemistry and Electroplating Celebrated Inaugural Session

The Summer School on Electrochemistry and Electroplating at the Technical University of Ilmenau took place from June 14 to 19, 2026. The inaugural event generated a great deal of interest: the fifteen available spots were quickly filled. Participants came from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
The diverse program of the first Summer School on Electrochemistry and Electroplating offered participants a comprehensive insight into the world of electrochemical surface engineering and energy storage and conversion. Through lectures, specialized presentations, hands-on workshops, and lab tours, they had the opportunity to get to know TU Ilmenau as a center for study and research and to exchange ideas with scientists and industry representatives. During an excursion to thyssenkrupp nucera in Arnstadt, participants learned about specific applications of electrochemistry and electroplating, such as the integration of electrochemical surface engineering and hydrogen technology. The technical program was complemented by opportunities to explore the region. Another highlight was the evening event hosted by the DGO Thuringia Regional Group, at which Dr. Rene Böttcher gave a presentation on multiphysical modeling and artificial intelligence for innovative surface engineering in the aviation industry. At the DGO summer party that followed, participants had the opportunity to network with DGO members. Numerous conversations took place and new connections were made in a relaxed atmosphere.
High Praise for the Summer School on Electrochemistry and Electroplating
The exchange with former graduates of the program was also particularly inspiring. The alumni shared their career paths following their studies in Ilmenau. Steffen Zschintzsch, Account Manager at Atotech, Franz Krümmling, TZO Leipzig GmbH, and Dr. Theresa Schötz, Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the U.S., highlighted in their presentations the diverse career opportunities available after completing the Master’s program in Electrochemistry and Electroplating. Some participants stayed an extra day to attend the Ilmenau Science Night. This event, held every three years, provides insights into research projects and scientific institutions at and around the Technical University of Ilmenau and consistently attracts many visitors from across Germany. The consistently positive feedback underscores the success of the ECG Summer School. Particular emphasis was placed on the interdisciplinary nature of electrochemistry and electroplating, as well as the numerous career prospects in research and industry. One participant remarked, “I’ve come away with a real appreciation for just how diverse electrochemistry is.” The first Summer School not only offered in-depth technical content but also promoted international exchange, networking, and enthusiasm for electrochemistry and electroplating.
