AkzoNobel Launches Self-Cleaning Exterior Coating

AkzoNobel has launched a new self-cleaning extrusion coating in China that uses natural rain to remove dust and dirt from the exterior walls of buildings.
AkzoNobel’s Trinar SC series was developed specifically to support urban renewal in China. The new coating will meet the demand in the high-end construction market for products that can protect buildings with complex curved surfaces and irregular architectural forms. The coating features hydrophilic self-cleaning technology and is certified according to the international weather resistance standard AAMA 2605. As a result, the coating not only provides long-lasting surface protection but also ensures that the facade retains a flawless, like-new appearance over the long term. “This is a significant innovation that enables customers to harness the long-term benefits of self-cleaning technology without having to make changes to existing coating lines—and without compromising on color selection or surface texture,” explains James Kavanagh, Commercial Director of AkzoNobel’s Coil and Extrusion business unit. He adds that by reducing the frequency of manual cleaning on high-rise buildings, this next-generation coating can help lower operating and maintenance costs over the entire life cycle of a building. It can also help reduce the consumption of water, chemicals, and maintenance resources typically associated with cleaning building facades. This makes it ideally suited for the structural requirements of irregular curtain wall geometries and also supports more sustainable building operations in the long term.
Successful Tests with Self-Cleaning Coatings
The factory-applied Trinar SC series will help the construction industry meet these new operational and maintenance challenges. To achieve a striking design effect, many high-end commercial buildings feature complex, curved surfaces and irregular architectural forms, which make facade cleaning and maintenance far more technically challenging. Kavanagh continues: “As cities reach new heights and aesthetics evolve over time, architecture is taking center stage in shaping urban identity through the ongoing revitalization of urban spaces. With a global track record of more than 25 years in self-cleaning coatings for coils, we are ideally positioned to meet this growing demand.” Long-term on-site testing of the new coating was conducted as part of an office building project in the Dongying Economic Development Zone. Throughout the testing period, the new product demonstrated exceptional, consistent self-cleaning performance. Beyond this pilot project, the system has also been successfully deployed in a number of premium construction projects, including “16 On An Street” in Hong Kong. The market launch will soon be expanded to include additional high-end construction applications and is expected to strengthen AkzoNobel’s portfolio of high-performance architectural coatings.
