AkzoNobel supplies marine coatings for new Baltic Sea ferries: The "Jantar Unity" will receive a high-performance coating system for heavily loaded car decks. Two other ferries will also be equipped with impact- and abrasion-resistant, corrosion-resistant epoxy coatings.

One of the most modern ships in operation on the Baltic Sea has recently entered service - the first of three new ferries equipped with AkzoNobel products. The "Jantar Unity" is a roll-on/roll-off ferry for vehicles and passengers (RoPax), operating between Świnoujście in Poland and Trelleborg in Sweden. It is protected by 280,000 liters of the company's International brand of ship coatings. In cooperation with Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk and operator Unity Line, the agreement also includes the supply of products for a second vessel - scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2026 - while steel cutting for the third vessel is expected to start later this year. "Our cooperation with AkzoNobel has a direct impact on the quality of the ships we build," explains Katarzyna Antoń, Head of Marketing at Unity Line. "The products supplied meet the highest standards, which is crucial for us. It is also important that these proven solutions will also be used in the construction of the remaining ferries as part of the RoPax project."

Corrosion-resistant epoxy coating for ferries

The coating system planned for the "Jantar Unity" included the application of Interzone 954GF on the car decks. This impact- and abrasion-resistant, corrosion-resistant epoxy coating is particularly suitable for the long-term protection of surfaces that are exposed to heavy mechanical loads, such as car decks. "We are very grateful to our partners in this project for their trust and for choosing our high-performance solutions," adds Mirosław Pawlik, Sales Manager for Marine Coatings in Central Europe at AkzoNobel. "We are now looking forward to the delivery of the two remaining ferries, which we will soon be able to see on the Baltic Sea." With a length of 195.6 meters and a capacity of up to 400 passengers, the Jantar Unity is equipped with four dual-fuel engines that run on LNG and marine diesel. This contributes to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions, while the propulsion system operates in a hybrid configuration, which also helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. AkzoNobel International supplies a wide range of high-performance solutions for ships worldwide, including antifouling and foul-release coatings as well as protection for cargo holds and ballast tanks.
