A large number of young people are starting vocational training at Evonik this year. A total of 463 young men and women will be part of the 2022 training year across Germany. In the previous year, which was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, there were 350.

Evonik's trainee ratio has been above the German industry average for years without interruption. This currently stands at around 5 percent, with Evonik achieving around 7 percent. For the 2022 training year starting these days, the specialty chemicals company received an average of 15 applications for one training position. Evonik equips all trainees with laptops or iPads to provide them with modern learning opportunities. The company also offers young people prospects and predictability beyond the apprenticeship period: "After successful completion, all Evonik apprentices are offered permanent employment," says Thomas Wessel, Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director at Evonik.

The young people's chances of this are good: around 99 percent of Evonik's trainees usually pass their final exams. Even in the coronavirus year 2021, with its special challenges and restrictions for vocational training, the pass rate was 98 percent, which is still well above average. The company invested around €62 million in training young people in 2021 alone. At Evonik, young people learn professions such as chemical technician, IT specialist, plant mechanic or industrial clerk. Of the 463 young people starting training in the new year, Evonik is training 338 for its own needs. The company is also training 125 young people for other companies.
