Metrohm introduces a kit for the simple determination of the hydrogen permeation of materials. This allows the hydrogen permeation to be determined in accordance with ASTM G148, which is important in electroplating or corrosion protection, for example.

Hydrogen is regarded as the energy storage medium of the future. It is generated electrochemically in electrolyzers on electrode surfaces. Hydrogen can also be produced on the material surface during galvanic processes or cathodic corrosion protection - in this case, however, as an undesirable side reaction. In all these cases, the hydrogen atoms formed can penetrate into the interior of the electrode material, causing hydrogen embrittlement. It is therefore important to determine the hydrogen permeation in the respective material experimentally.

Metrohm's kit, which can be used to determine hydrogen permeation according to ASTM G148, consists of two potentiostats, the software and a Devanathan-Stachurski cell. The software contains a dedicated method and fit algorithms to automatically determine the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen. The system is also available as a multi-channel system for high sample throughput. The procedure with this kit is described in Metrohm Application Note AN-EC-032. The advantages of the system are an automatic evaluation and calculation of the effective diffusion constant of the atomic hydrogen, a simple and inexpensive measurement setup and the short measurement time.
