Axalta Coating Systems, a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, has released the 70th edition of its Global Automotive Color Popularity Report. Based on the results of the annual report, the three most popular automotive colors in 2022 can be clearly identified: White, Black and Gray. First published in 1953, Axalta's Most Popular Car Colors Study is the longest-running and most comprehensive color study in the automotive industry.
Today's vehicle coatings more intense than ever before
"Today's vehicles are painted in shades that are even more intense than ever before," explains Robert Schnell, Vice President, Global Sales & Product Management at Axalta. "Compared to the white color variations of the 1950s, for example, today's whites are more brilliant and made to shine with shimmering effects. White, black, gray and silver are the most common automotive colors on the road, accounting for a total of 82 percent."
White shades at the top worldwide
Globally, white tones remain at the top of the most popular vehicle colors (34 percent overall), with pearlescent white accounting for 14 percent and solid white tones 20 percent. In second place on the consumer popularity scale are deep black shades, which shine in modern metallic and pearl effects and account for a total of 21 percent of vehicles on the road. Gray shades (19%), in turn, feature effects in a variety of multicolored hues. Colorful variations of blue (8 %), red (5 %) and green (1 %) have a high overall color intensity and brilliance.
