Plasmatreat introduces new open-air plasma system for EPDM profiles

Plasmatreat presented a new EPDM station with open-air plasma technology at Fakuma 2024. This enables manufacturers from the automotive industry to pre-treat the surfaces of EPDM/TPE profiles, for example for door seals, and achieve improved adhesive strength of adhesives and paints.
Treatment with Openair plasma improves the adhesive strength of adhesives and paints by activating the profile surface. Door seals for vehicles are usually made of EPDM/TPE. This non-polar material makes further processing more difficult, such as bonding with flock or applying bonded coatings. For this reason, the plastic profiles must be pre-treated to activate the surface: The plasma jet introduces hydroxyl groups to the surface. The open-air plasma technology from Plasmatreat GmbH, the world market leader in atmospheric plasma technology, has established itself in the industry as a clean, efficient and environmentally friendly process that improves subsequent processes. Plasma technology has proven itself in EPDM production for over 20 years and has long been established as the standard among suppliers. Plasmatreat is now introducing a new EPDM station that further optimizes and simplifies the process thanks to its more compact design and diverse functions. For example, it offers greater efficiency and improved adjustment options for the plasma nozzles for flexible usability in production.
New EPDM system from Plasmatreat is particularly compact and flexible
The new EPDM station from Plasmatreat goes beyond the current standard. The system is significantly more compact than the previous model and can provide up to 12 nozzles in the housing. The generator is housed in the casing to save space, meaning that no external control cabinet or additional cable connections are required. This offers users maximum flexibility with minimum space requirements. With up to twelve individually controllable plasma nozzles, the new EPDM station is also particularly flexible to use. Rotating plasma nozzles can also be used for particularly gentle pre-treatment without visible changes to the surface in bonded coating applications.
High-tech functions for precise EPDM/TPE pre-treatment of the profile surface
For precision and flexibility, each nozzle of the new EPDM station from Plasmatreat can be controlled individually via the user-friendly HMI (Human-Machine Interface) with individual recipes. The nozzles can be selected automatically: The system recognizes the selected nozzles thanks to sensor detection and coding. This enables a quick change between the stored recipes. Automatic detection of product movement enables intelligent nozzle activation and ensures efficient, reliable processes. The system treats EPDM/TPE profiles selectively and precisely with a homogeneous plasma jet. This results in improved direct adhesion of the materials and consistent coating quality. For optimum, energy-saving climate control, the system can be equipped with energy-efficient Rittal Blue e+ climate control technology on request. The new EPDM station is also equipped with an optimized extraction system. It keeps the working environment clean and reduces the need for cleaning. The sophisticated maintenance concept also contributes to reduced downtimes. The system's plug-in nozzles, quick-change system and overall maintenance-friendly design reduce service times to a minimum.
