The Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metal Chemistry (Fem) and Helmut Fischer GmbH are intensifying their collaboration. As part of a research project funded by the Helmut Fischer Foundation, Fem is investigating the concentration distribution of electrolytes in electroplating baths.

On August 19, 2025, the Fem Research Institute received a Fischerscrope XAN Liquid Analyzer from Fischer for the in situ and online analysis of element concentrations. The inline measuring device developed by Fischer enables the Fem to monitor dynamics in the concentration distribution. A Miralloy electrolyte from Umicore is being investigated as the first application. This copper-tin-zinc electrolyte has been used for decades as a nickel-free alternative for connectors, costume jewelry and clothing and is therefore an integral part of everyday life.

Optimization of galavanic coating processes

After the element analysis in the Fischerscrope XAN Liquid Analyzer, the measurement results are automatically and quickly transmitted to the Fem control system via the Profinet data interface - a common industry standard. This makes the device an important piece of the puzzle for the Fem on the way to the Smart Factory in the context of Industry 4.0. The measurement data obtained as a function of time, correlated with the geometrically different parts and the comparison with coating thickness measurements, open up the prospect of coating processes being even better understood, more resource-efficient, more sustainable and at the same time more cost-optimized in the future. Fem and Fischer are continuing to work closely together with this vision and are looking forward to the first results.
