Heidelberg and Solenis: Coated paper packaging

At Fachpack 2025 in Nuremberg, Heidelberg and Solenis presented a jointly developed innovative process for barrier coatings on flexible paper packaging for food, beverages, cosmetics and certain non-food items.
With regard to a functioning circular economy, flexible paper packaging is becoming increasingly important as a substitute for plastics, also known as 'paperization'. A process jointly developed by Solenis, a leading manufacturer of barrier coatings, and Heidelberg enables the industrial, partial and therefore cost-effective application of barrier coatings to paper packaging. As a system integrator, Heidelberg has integrated the Solenis technology into the web-fed flexographic printing process with the Boardmaster. The barriers are applied to the paper web during the running process only at the necessary points and with register accuracy. The aim of the collaboration is to utilize the advantages of the individual components of the Boardmaster for the application of Solenis barrier coatings in order to make the process technology quickly and easily available to packaging producers.

"Economic innovation is crucial if we are to replace plastic packaging with recyclable or compostable paper packaging. By cooperating with Solenis on the development of lacquers and coatings and the inline production of coated paper packaging, Heidelberg is underpinning its claim to be a strong driving force in paperization," says Dr. David Schmedding, Member of the Management Board responsible for Technology and Sales at Heidelberg. "We are thus acting as a full-service provider of end-to-end solutions in the growth market of mass production of fiber-based packaging solutions." At Fachpack 2025 (September 23 to 25 in Nuremberg), Heidelberg and Solenis will be presenting the innovative process at their joint stand 4A-342 in Hall 4. Visitors will be given samples to take away to test the results of the coating process for themselves.
