Fraunhofer Vision: Seminar on Optical 3D Measurement Technology for Quality Assurance

The Fraunhofer Vision Division is continuing its seminar series on optical 3D metrology and will host the next seminar with a hands-on workshop on October 7 and 8, 2026: “Optical 3D Measurement Technology for Quality Assurance in Production” at Fraunhofer IIS, the Development Center for X-ray Technology in Fürth.
Precise adherence to geometric dimensions plays a major role in quality assurance during production. Measurement using mechanical gauges or coordinate measuring machines is time-consuming and can therefore usually only be performed on a sample basis. Because the operating principle is completely different from that of mechanical measurement methods—and due to a lack of experience in some application areas—one should thoroughly research the topic before making such an investment. This seminar provides information relevant to that decision. It consists of a theoretical and a practical component.
Optical 3D Measurement Technology for Quality Assurance in Production
On the first day, participants will first receive a systematic overview of the fundamentals and common methods of optical 3D measurement technology, such as fringe projection, laser sectioning, digital holography, white-light interferometry, and LiDAR, as well as an introduction to algorithms and software. X-ray computed tomography is also introduced as a complementary volumetric measurement method for determining dimensional structures within the material. Following this, selected applications in quality assurance are presented in the form of case studies, and an overview of standards and guidelines in the field of optical 3D metrology is provided. On the second day, the focus will be on hands-on demonstrations of various 3D measurement systems, and test measurements on selected samples will be possible. The target audience includes engineers and designers from development and testing departments, quality assurance staff, and executives seeking to establish a solid basis for investment decisions.
