Dürr: New Dispensing System for Very Small Quantities of Adhesives and Sealants

The potential applications for Dürr’s new EcoMeter XS micro-dosing system are diverse and include, among other things, the assembly of automotive batteries, the manufacture of power electronics, the bonding of magnets into electric motors, the application of greases and seals, and small-volume potting processes. Until now, Dürr has used dosing technology from the EcoShot Meter series for such applications. However, these systems reached their performance limits when dealing with very small application volumes. One example is spot application on cylindrical cells, which creates a thermal bridge between the cell and the cooling unit. “One-tenth of a cubic centimeter, applied to the end face of the cell, is sufficient for thermal contact,” says Sebastian Jochum, product manager for dosing technology at Dürr. With the EcoMeter XS, Dürr now offers the perfect solution for these specific requirements in the production of battery systems. The EcoMeter XS dispenses and applies the material continuously without interrupting the material flow. Refill times, as required with piston dispensers, are eliminated. For larger volumes, Dürr already had solutions for continuous dosing in its portfolio, which are used, for example, in the bonding of automotive windshields. The EcoMeter XS now enables minimum flow rates of 0.00005 cm³/s up to a maximum of 1 cm³/s. Dosing can be controlled continuously, and material is supplied via cartridges or hobbocks. “With the EcoMeter XS, we’re scaling our dosing technology down to the micro range. This means we have the right dosing solution for every required quantity,” explains Jochum.

EcoMeter XS Completes Dürr’s Dosing Portfolio

Depending on the model, the compact dosing unit weighs only 0.8 to 1.6 kg, which simplifies installation. Users can mount the EcoMeter XS on conventional robot systems, as well as on gantry systems or robots with low payload capacities. This makes the EcoMeter XS suitable for use in compact manufacturing cells, such as in battery and electronics production, as well as for servomotors and seals of all kinds. For easy operation, users benefit from a clear dosing and process control system that bundles all functions. To cover the entire range of applications involving very small volumes, Dürr has designed the EcoMeter XS using a modular concept. This results in different configurations and variants, allowing the EcoMeter XS to quickly adapt to changing process requirements. This increases flexibility when, for example, application volumes, viscosities, or component geometries vary. With the EcoMeter XS, Dürr rounds out its portfolio of dispensing systems. Together with the proven EcoShot Meter and EcoMeter SP piston dispensers, the automated application of 1K and 2K adhesives and sealants is now fully covered: from very small volumes to continuous dispensing in high-volume applications.
