The historic city of Malacca in Malaysia has been repainted by AkzoNobel with specialty paint to preserve the vibrant culture and identity of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. AkzoNobel coatings are used worldwide in architecture to preserve World Heritage Sites.

As well as developing a special red shade to refresh the town hall and surrounding buildings in the old town square, AkzoNobel's Dulux products have also been used to coat store fronts along the Malacca River and revitalize a popular mural. Malacca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, is expecting around 19 million visitors this year and will host World Tourism Day in 2025. "The importance of protecting the historical heritage of these buildings cannot be overstated," says My Lan Nguyen, Head of AkzoNobel's Decorative Paints ASEAN business. "Many of them are almost 500 years old, and each of them has a story to tell. That's why we are so passionate about using our expertise to protect cultural heritage and make the past a part of the future." Datuk Shadan Othman, Mayor of Malacca Historical City Council, added: "We are delighted to be working with AkzoNobel on this important initiative to preserve and enhance Malacca's cultural heritage. This collaboration has not only enhanced the aesthetics of the city, but also showcases its rich history and vibrant culture."

The company's Dulux brand first collaborated with the Malacca state government in 2014 when 26 historic buildings and monuments were repainted. The latest project has refreshed the city's unique architecture and will also play an important role in promoting local development. My Lan continues: "These buildings are a symbol of the past, but also an expression of the multicultural tradition and architecture of the time, which is why people look at them with fondness and value them as part of their heritage. However, this project is not just about preserving the buildings. It will also help to create economic opportunities for the local community and provide long-term benefits by attracting tourism. And all through the power of color." Malacca is one of several UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the world where AkzoNobel products are used. These include La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, Westminster Abbey in London, UK, Göbekli Tepe in Turkey, Kinderdijk in the Netherlands and Ouro Preto in Brazil.
