Brillux Powder Coatings Approved for Use in Swiss Military Equipment for the First Time
The Swiss Federal Office for Armaments (Armasuisse) has granted Brillux Industrielack certification as a certified paint supplier. Industrial coaters can now apply powder coatings to components for military applications within the Swiss Army’s area of responsibility.
When it comes to coating components for military applications, the use of liquid paints has been the standard to date. However, as demand for military goods rises, powder coating offers enormous potential, simply due to the growing number of powder coating machines. For the first time, Armasuisse is establishing the conditions within its area of responsibility to coat components using certified powder coatings. Brillux Industrielack is the first manufacturer that the responsible Office for Defense Materiel has now approved as a supplier of powder coatings for military applications. The certification covers Brillux Industrielack’s premium polyester powder coating 5936. This product was developed specifically for military applications and is available in both F9 and HR grades. The highly weather-resistant powder coating is suitable for outdoor use, even under extreme climatic conditions, on various metallic substrates. It offers excellent gloss and color stability, good corrosion protection properties, and good chemical resistance.
Powder Coatings Instead of Liquid Coatings for Military Technology
The F9 grade offers an additional feature relevant to military applications. It provides excellent camouflage in the near-infrared spectral range. The product is approved in the following colors: RAL 6014-F9 Yellow Olive, RAL 6031-F9 Bronze Green, RAL 8027-F9 Leather Brown, and RAL 9021-F9 Tar Black. In HR quality, the powder coating is approved in the colors RAL 1013 Pearl White, RAL 7012 Basalt Gray, RAL 9001 Cream White, RAL 9010 Pure White, and RAL 6014 Yellow Olive. The topcoat in both grades is supplemented by a primer in Light Gray (Korro-Protect EP 5816-7100). If this is insufficient for galvanized or highly gassing substrates, an epoxy anti-corrosion primer (Primer Powder EP 5819-7101) is available. Industrial coaters can thus implement a consistent system design with powder coatings that are optimally coordinated with one another. Switching the coating process for military vehicle components, equipment, or transport and storage containers from liquid painting to powder coating offers numerous advantages. This includes VOC-compliant coating completely free of volatile organic compounds, simpler application without time-consuming preparatory work, and lower paint consumption due to greater efficiency. Since long drying times are eliminated, process times are significantly reduced. A high degree of automation also ensures fast and reliable processing.
A Pioneer in Powder Coatings for Military Applications
The approval by Armasuisse is further proof for Brillux Industrielack of the high quality of its military powder coatings. As early as 2017, the manufacturer was the first to receive approval from the Bundeswehr’s Institute for Defense Science and Materials (WIWeB) in accordance with the Defense Equipment Standard (VG 95211). To this day, the company offers one of the broadest color ranges for F9-quality polyester powder coatings. These include RAL 6031 Bronze Green as the base color for the camouflage coating, the two camouflage finishes RAL 8027 Leather Brown and RAL 9021 Tar Black, as well as RAL 1039 Sand Beige as a camouflage color for desertand steppe regions. The F9 colors are supplemented by RAL 1013 Pearl White and RAL 9005 Jet Black in HR.
