BASF Coatings successfully completes the introduction of green electricity in European production: The measures reduce Scope 2 emissions and improve the product carbon footprint of BASF coating solutions for customers.

As part of its Carbon Management Roadmap, BASF Coatings has successfully implemented the planned conversion of its European production to electricity from renewable sources. At the French sites, the company continues to rely on the national low-CO2 electricity mix. The company has thus reached a key milestone in its sustainability strategy. At the same time, BASF Coatings is helping customers in the automotive sector and other industries to achieve their own climate and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) goals. The use of electricity from renewable sources in the European plants is a central lever within a comprehensive package of measures that BASF Coatings is implementing worldwide to reduce CO2 emissions. Together, these measures make a decisive contribution to the long-term reduction of CO2 emissions in the company's production. With the milestone achieved, the transformation of the global production network will be consistently continued. Selected sites in North America and Asia have also already switched to electricity from renewable sources.

BASF coatings with a lower product carbon footprint

"The conversion achieved in our European production shows that we are consistently pursuing our own climate targets. We want to reduce our specific CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030," says Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings. "At the same time, the use of renewable energy leads to a lower product carbon footprint of our coating solutions. This enables our customers to manufacture products with a reduced carbon footprint and bring them to market." The use of electricity from renewable sources significantly reduces Scope 2 emissions. In addition, energy and material efficiency measures enable further CO2 reductions along industrial value chains.
