BASF Coatings has received certification from TÜV Rheinland for the calculation methodology of its Eco Impact Assessment Tool. The independent assessment confirms that the methodology meets established standards in terms of transparency and consistency.

The certification of BASF Coatings' Eco Impact Assessment Tool by TÜV Rheinland also proves that the calculations of the corporate carbon footprint for body and paint stores comply with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. This provides companies with a validated basis for assessing their environmental impact and managing it in a targeted manner. The tool is integrated into Refinity, BASF Coatings' cloud-based platform for digital business management. It helps workshops to systematically assess and optimize their sustainability performance - and to tap into economic potential in the process. The Eco Impact Assessment has already been in use in eleven European countries since 2025. The TÜV certification now additionally confirms that the system meets international requirements. The certification also provides a validated database that supports repair, investment and sustainability-related decisions and can be used in discussions with insurers and in rating procedures. In terms of methodology, the Eco Impact Assessment Tool is based on a life cycle assessment approach and records all relevant material and energy flows in a paint store. This includes processes such as painting and drying, product consumption, waste management and vehicle fleet operations.

"Based on real operational data and on-site measurements, Refinity Eco Impact Assessment provides a comprehensive picture of environmental, economic and social performance. With minimal effort for the companies and with expert support from the BASF Coatings consulting teams, sustainability becomes a measurable and controllable business factor," explains Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Director Global Sustainability, BASF Coatings. "The independent certification by TÜV Rheinland is a strong signal to our customers that Eco Impact Assessment delivers credible, consistent and actionable results," says Dr. Rahel Reichmann, Head of Sustainability Automotive Refinish Coatings at BASF Coatings. "By creating a transparent corporate carbon footprint, Eco Impact Assessment enables meaningful benchmarking - from individual companies to MSO networks and insurer repair programs. At the same time, the results provide practical, concrete recommendations that companies can use to identify potential for improvement and translate sustainability measures into measurable efficiency and cost benefits." Certification by TÜV Rheinland is an independent validation of the sustainability assessment process. It can help bodyshops and paint stores to demonstrate their environmental performance to customers, insurers and OEMs. It also helps to meet the growing demands for transparency and sustainability in the automotive refinish market.
