The VDMA has published the first technical rule for mechanical smoke and heat exhaust ventilators. The VDMA 24001 standard sheet describes the compliant use of mechanical smoke and heat exhaust ventilators, thus closing a long-standing gap in technical regulations.

The VDMA General Ventilation Technology Association has now published the final version of VDMA Standard Sheet 24001, following the publication of an initial draft in February. The standard sheet explains the applicability of mechanical smoke and heat extraction devices in mechanical smoke extraction systems in a detailed and generally valid manner, without going into manufacturer-specific details. This publication is essential for the industry, as the Model Administrative Regulation for Technical Building Regulations (MVV TB) stipulates that mechanical smoke and heat extraction devices must be used in accordance with DIN EN 12101-3:2015 - however, there is currently no recognized technical rule for this application. "The aim of VDMA Standard Sheet 24001 is to become a recognized technical rule in the future and to be included in the MVV TB. This would be a great help for manufacturers, planners, operators, building supervisory authorities, experts and test experts," says Christine Montigny, consultant at the VDMA General Ventilation Technology Association.

The 33-page final version of the standard sheet contains many more clarifications compared to the draft version. According to Frank Wahl, Chairman of the VDMA subcommittee on VDMA 24001, the sixth chapter, for example, deals in detail with thermal insulation and the connection of smoke extraction ducts to mechanical smoke and heat exhaust ventilators in order to meet the requirements of building regulations, such as those described in DIN 4102-4. In addition, the designs for complex mechanical smoke and heat exhaust ventilators - such as those that require an external cooling air supply - are explained in detail. VDMA 24001 contains a great deal of information on the different types of devices, temperature classes, operating modes, maintenance, marking and labeling. Smoke and heat exhaust ventilators can, for example, be installed on a foundation, a steel structure or a plinth. Depending on the installation, the requirements regarding position and fastening differ. The different types of installation and all other topics in the standard sheet are illustrated in detail using diagrams. VDMA 24001 is available from DIN Media GmbH (formerly Beuth Verlag).
