BASF at the Battery Show Europe 2024

BASF offers a range of innovative coating solutions for optimum protection and improved performance in a variety of platform designs and battery systems. These solutions, ranging from pretreatment to cathodic dip coating (CDC), are instrumental in achieving the desired results. One outstanding technology is Chemetall's environmentally friendly Oxsilan thin-film technology, which applies an even and protective layer to metal surfaces. In conjunction with CathoGuard technology, this unique combination significantly increases corrosion protection, improving the durability and performance of battery systems. BASF's CathoGuard portfolio also ensures comprehensive corrosion protection for multi-metal vehicle bodies and components, including battery covers, ensuring that all major components remain protected from the damaging effects of corrosion.

In a next innovation step, Chemetall is developing chrome-free surface treatment solutions for copper foils used as anode current collectors. The removal of Cr(VI) from the passivation process promotes both a safer and a more sustainable future. BASF is also developing protective interface coatings for electrode foils - an exciting advance to protect cathodes and anodes while improving performance. Such coatings help to enable novel battery systems, such as solid-state lithium or lithium-sulfur cells, and BASF's portfolio of surface treatment and coating solutions not only provides corrosion protection, but can also increase the performance and lifetime of battery cells, enabling the development of further improved battery systems. In addition, high-performance processing additives enable battery cell manufacturers to overcome challenges in all areas of battery cell production, such as the preparation of conductive slurries, improved performance and better processability in the coating lines. BASF's portfolio of innovative process additives offers suitable solutions to address current and future requirements and challenges, enabling smoother and more efficient manufacturing.
