The European Center for Dispersion Technologies (EZD) in Selb opened its new building with an additional 700 m² in July. From now on, additional rooms for research & development are available for intensive research on bio-based, sustainable and non-toxic coatings.

In the new building of the European Center for Dispersion Technologies (EZD) in Selb, additional rooms for research & development are available for the scientists to conduct intensive research on bio-based, sustainable and non-toxic coatings. In this way, the EZD contributes to living up to a CO2 neutral EU. The European Green Deal, with the goal of a completely CO2 neutral EU by 2050, also influences the research areas of the EZD in Selb. Currently, EZD scientists are conducting intensive research in the areas of bio-based, sustainable and non-toxic formulations and coatings. In order to be prepared for the future, new premises in Selb were put into operation in July 2023. The focus there is on coatings. The establishment of a laboratory for coating and characterization of surfaces as well as a dispersion pilot plant will expand industry-related research and also enable the offering of complete solutions from raw material to application. The focus is particularly on the development of bio-based and functional coatings.

Within the framework of various research projects (national/international), scientists at the EZD have been working, among other things, on the development of bio-based clear coat systems together with the use of natural, non-toxic photoinitiators based on polyphenols. These are found in plants and fruits such as grapes, among others. In order to work efficiently, a close exchange with several industrial companies is necessary. In addition, the goal of the Green Deal can only be achieved in close cooperation between research and industry. Therefore, the EZD also acts as a founding member of the network go2green, which, with the help of an association of national companies, advances the topic of developing bio-based, non-toxic paints and coatings with reference to the Green Deal. "Responsible use of resources is a task that affects us all. Through our research at EZD, we are contributing to achieving the Green Deal," said Dr. Felipe Wolff-Fabris, EZD site manager.
