System Coatings

In surface technology, system coatings refer to coordinated multi-layer structures in which individual paint layers are functionally coordinated with each other and only develop their full performance when they work together. In contrast to single-coat systems, the focus here is not on individual products, but on the overall system consisting of pre-treatment, primer, intermediate coat and top coat.

The pre-treatment forms the basis for the adhesion and long-term stability of the paint structure. Cleaning and conversion processes ensure a defined, activated surface on which the subsequent layers can build up evenly. In industrial applications, for example in combination with cathodic dip coating as a primer, corrosion protection is already significantly determined in the first process stages.

Based on this, intermediate and top coats take on specific functions such as mechanical protection, UV resistance, chemical resistance or decorative properties. The interactions between the layers are crucial, as the adhesion, flexibility and stress behavior of the overall system must be coordinated in order to prevent cracking or delamination.

It is therefore not only the formulation of individual coatings that is relevant to the quality of system coatings, but above all the process-reliable coordination of all steps. Parameters such as coating thicknesses, drying and curing conditions and application methods influence the final result, as does the compatibility of the materials used. Modern system coatings are designed to meet increasing requirements for corrosion protection, sustainability and process integration in industrial coating systems.
