Rust
Rust is a common phenomenon on metallic surfaces and results from an oxidative process known as corrosion. Corrosion is a natural reaction in which metals react with their environment, especially with moisture and oxygen. Rust, essentially iron oxide, forms on the surface of metals, especially iron and steel.
The formation of rust often begins with small defects in the protective layer on the metal surface. Moisture, whether from rain, humidity or other sources, penetrates these defects and reacts with the metal. Oxygen from the air plays a decisive role here, as it promotes the oxidative process. The resulting chemical reaction leads to the formation of rust, which is often visible as a brownish-orange deposit on the metal surface.
Rust has a negative impact on the structural integrity of metal objects. It can lead to a weakening of the material, which can be particularly problematic for load-bearing structures or vehicles. In addition, rust significantly impairs the aesthetic quality of metal surfaces.
The prevention of rust is therefore of great importance. This is achieved through the use of protective measures such as coatings, paints or special anti-corrosion agents. These protective coatings serve to insulate the metal from direct contact with moisture and oxygen in order to prevent or at least delay corrosion.
Combating rust often requires regular inspections in order to identify potential points of attack at an early stage and take appropriate measures. A combination of preventive protective coatings, regular maintenance and, if necessary, corrosion inhibitors is crucial to prolong the life of metal structures and maintain their functionality.
