Metal 3D Printing

Metal 3D printing refers to additive manufacturing processes in which metal components are built up layer by layer. Depending on the process, metal powder or metal wire is used as the raw material. The material is selectively melted and then solidified at the desired location. Lasers, electron beams, or electric arcs, among other sources, are used to generate the heat.

Common processes include selective laser melting, electron beam melting, laser cladding, and wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Metal 3D printing enables the production of complex geometries, internal structures, and custom-designed components that would be difficult or impossible to manufacture using conventional manufacturing methods.

The process is used in the aerospace industry, mechanical engineering, medical technology, and toolmaking, among other fields. It also enables repairs and the targeted reinforcement of existing metal components. Advantages include a high degree of design flexibility and on-demand manufacturing. Depending on the process, however, surface finishing, heat treatment, or additional machining steps may be required.
