Coat

Coating made from paint materials. Multi-layer coatings are referred to as a coating structure (coating system). The following designations are commonly used to identify the coating in more detail:

- according to the type of binder; e.g. alkyd resin coating, emulsion paint coating
- According to the type of substrate to be coated; e.g. metal primer
- According to the type of application in the paint structure: e.g. primer, top coat
- According to the type of object to be coated; e.g. ship paint, bridge paint
- According to the type of function of the coating; e.g. corrosion protection coating, fire protection coating

If the coating material has formed a continuous layer, it is referred to as a coating film.
