ABS
The electroplating of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) co-polymers is a process that is frequently used in industry to provide plastic components with a metallic coating. ABS, a thermoplastic material, is a popular material for electroplating due to its mechanical strength, heat resistance and good processability. The metallic coating improves the optical, electrical and mechanical properties of the material and makes it particularly attractive for applications such as automotive parts, electronic housings or decorative elements.
The process begins with pre-treatment of the ABS surface to ensure adhesion of the metal coating. This typically involves etching the surface with a chromium sulphuric acid solution to create a rough structure into which the metal coating can penetrate. The plastic surface is then chemically activated, often with palladium, to create a conductive base for the electroplating.
In the next step, the conductive layer is further strengthened by electrolysis in an electroplating bath. Metals such as copper, nickel or chrome are applied to the surface. The result is an even, adhesive metal coating that significantly improves the appearance and functionality of the ABS component.
The electroplated ABS co-polymer offers numerous advantages, including high corrosion resistance, attractive appearance and improved electrical conductivity. It is a key technology in the manufacture of high-quality products for industries such as automotive, electronics and consumer goods.
