Following the initial launch of the Rowasol GreenLine, the company has continued to advance the development of its bio-based liquid paints. The product portfolio, which was originally based on selected natural pigments as well as a natural black and a mineral white, has since been significantly expanded.

Rowasol’s new colorants are 100% bio-based and derived from a variety of sources, including turmeric root, radish, algae, tomatoes, wood (or lignin), and indigo. By incorporating additional raw material sources and suppliers, a significantly wider range of base colors is now available. In combination with the various colorants and tinting with bio-based white and black, this opens up an even broader color space. For an initial comparative analysis, the new colorants were deliberately tested under uniform conditions: each at a single concentration, in the same bioplastic, and at a processing temperature of 180 °C. These samples demonstrate the color range that has now been achieved. Furthermore, additional dosages, color mixtures, and tinting options offer considerable potential for realizing customer-specific color concepts.

Rowasol bio-based colorants expand the color space

During the tests, Rowasol was supported by FKuR, which provided a modern, bio-based injection-molding compound, Bio-Flex S 7514. According to FKuR, the material has a bio-based carbon content of 75% and combines good flow properties with high heat resistance. In parallel with the expansion of the color spectrum, the carrier system of the Rowasol GreenLine is also being further optimized. The bio-based content of the product is already at least 75%. By specifically reducing the components that are not yet bio-based, the bio-based content of the carrier has already been increased to over 96% in the first optimized formulations. At the same time, Rowasol is in discussions with several suppliers of bio-based surfactants with the goal of eventually developing a fully bio-based carrier system for this application.
