A new paint shop for ICE trains is being built at Deutsche Bahn's ICE maintenance facility in Cottbus. In Hall 1, 10 Fanuc robots will take over the automated sanding and painting of ICE 4 carriage bodies on the new painting track.

Deutsche Bahn is building a new, state-of-the-art ICE maintenance facility in Cottbus by 2026. In future, Fanuc robots will take over the automated sanding and painting work on the new ICE-4 carriages. In cooperation with DB, a high degree of automation is to be achieved in Cottbus. Modern automation solutions will relieve railroad employees of heavy physical work and counteract the shortage of skilled workers.

Fanuc is supplying the fully automated painting line in collaboration with SLF Oberflächentechnik. Individual ICE wagons are automatically pre-sanded and recoated in combined spray and drying booths (KST) by Fanuc painting robots. SLF contributes plant technology such as automatic pre-sanding systems, robot-assisted spraying and drying booths and lifting platforms. The KST booths are equipped with lifting platforms that can be used to reach all surfaces for manual work such as preparation, painting and finishing. Automation and the use of water-based paints should also make the painting process more sustainable. "We are very pleased to be able to equip another leading company in the field of green mobility," says Jan Kamenicky, Head of Paint at Fanuc Europe.
