BYK is introducing Disperbyk-2180, a new wetting and dispersing additive for inorganic pigments and fillers in aqueous systems. The polycarboxylate ether-based additive is designed for applications that require high stability over a wide pH range.

The polycarboxylate ether-based structure of Disperbyk-2180 opens up additional formulation possibilities, including in light of increasingly relevant environmental requirements. Due to its high pH tolerance, the additive is suitable, for example, for use in biocide- and VOC-free paints and architectural coatings—such as (dispersion) silicate paints. Thanks to its molecular structure, which features a high density of ionic binding groups, Disperbyk-2180 ensures particularly effective deflocculation and stabilization of inorganic particles. This applies, among other things, to titanium dioxide, transparent iron oxides, and fillers.

New Dispersing Additive for Aqueous Coating Systems

According to the manufacturer, the additive also significantly reduces the viscosity of the ground material, thereby enabling high pigment loadings while maintaining good processability. Furthermore, it achieves fine particle sizes and uniform particle distribution, which has an extremely positive effect on color and transparency. Disperbyk-2180 is suitable for a wide range of applications, including house and architectural paints, wood and furniture coatings, industrial coatings, as well as automotive refinish and original equipment coatings. The additive is also used in marine coatings, corrosion protection, and in printing inks and inkjet inks. The underlying polycarboxylate ether structure expands the range of available approaches for the dispersion of inorganic pigments and fillers.
