BASF Coatings Becomes Surventis — An Independent Company

Surventis, formerly BASF Coatings, has begun operations as an independent company—backed by the global investment firm Carlyle in partnership with QIA. BASF continues to hold a 40 percent stake.
Surventis, formerly BASF Coatings, launched as an independent company on July 1, 2026, thereby completing its spin-off from BASF. With annual revenue of approximately 3.9 billion euros and about 10,700 employees, Surventis is one of the world’s leading providers of automotive coatings and surface treatment solutions. The company is majority-owned by funds managed by the global investment firm Carlyle, in partnership with the Qatar Investment Authority. BASF continues to hold a 40 percent stake in Surventis. The company’s new website is now available at www.surventiscoatings.com. Under its new name and with a new brand identity, Surventis will continue to develop, produce, and market coatings and surface treatment solutions for industrial, automotive, and refinish customers worldwide. The portfolio includes established brands such as Chemetall, Glasurit, and R-M and offers high-performance and sustainable solutions. Surventis serves more than 42,000 customers in over 140 countries through a network of more than 30 production and development sites. The company is headquartered in Münster, Germany, home to the world’s largest integrated paint production facility.
Surventis as an Independent Company
As an independent company, Surventis aims to operate with greater speed, agility, and focus. Carlyle will support the business through targeted investments in global expertise and local production, drawing on its experience in spinning off and building independent industrial companies. Surventis will strategically focus on entrepreneurship, performance, and growth, helping customers succeed in today’s challenging and rapidly changing markets. “Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Surventis and for all our employees worldwide,” said Jens Luehring, Chief Executive Officer of Surventis. “I would like to thank the entire team, whose dedication and hard work have led to the achievement of this milestone. We are launching as an independent company, building on more than 130 years of coating expertise and some of the industry’s most trusted brands. Our customers will benefit from a faster, more focused partner that devotes its full attention to the surfaces they manufacture and sell. Their success is our success. We’re already among the best in this industry, and our goal is clear: We want to become the leading technology company for coatings.”
Experienced Management Team at Surventis
Surventis will continue to work with the same products, technologies, brands, and technical teams that customers already rely on today. The portfolio across all three business units remains unchanged, ensuring continuity in reliability, quality, and service. Surventis is led by its Executive Committee, headed by Chief Executive Officer Jens Luehring. The Executive Committee also includes Chief Financial Officer Michael Pontzen and Chief Transformation Officer Ewout van Jarwaarde. Together with Nils Lessmann, Executive Vice President of Operations Mobility/Refinish, and the heads of the company’s three business divisions—Frank Naber, Executive Vice President of Surface Treatment, Patrick Zhao, Executive Vice President of Mobility Coatings, and Steve Arndt, Executive Vice President of Refinish Coatings—they form an experienced and complementary Executive Committee that combines fresh external perspectives with a high degree of business continuity.
