A new EU regulation makes training mandatory when processing polyurethane (PUR) coating hardeners with a diisocyanate content higher than 0.1%. The coating manufacturer Adler has already modified its hardener formulations so that no training is required.

On August 24, 2023, an EU regulation came into force requiring mandatory training for the processing of PUR hardeners with a higher diisocyanate content than 0.1%. But Adler customers can breathe a sigh of relief: the Austrian coatings manufacturer has revised its entire range of hardeners so that no additional training is required - while maintaining the same high quality and making processing even easier. Isocyanates are chemical substances that are required for every 2K PUR coating. Only mixing the coating with the isocyanate-based hardener ensures the desired high surface quality. However, monomeric diisocyanates contained in them can irritate the skin and respiratory tract and cause allergies. For this reason, the EU has set very strict limits for diisocyanates and made training mandatory for the processing of all products that exceed these limits from Aug. 24, 2023. This not only costs money, but above all time: every employee must complete a training course lasting several hours, which must be repeated every five years.

Adler customers, however, can take a relaxed view of this troublesome issue: All PUR hardeners for solvent-based coatings and all Aqua-PUR hardeners for water-based coatings from Adler will in future be below the prescribed limit value. Therefore, no additional training will be required for the processing of 2K coatings from Adler in the future. This worry-free guarantee was made possible by a modified formulation. "The modification relates exclusively to the proportion of diisocyanate monomers in the hardener. The processing properties of our hardeners remain unchanged," emphasizes furniture lacquer development manager Mario Bortolotti. This means that Adler customers will not notice anything at all about the changeover; the dosage remains unchanged, as does the quality of the 2K surface. At the same time, the revised Adler hardeners ensure added health and safety for processors - in line with the Austrian coatings manufacturer's consistent sustainability strategy. And Adler has yet another goodie to offer its customers: Recently, the containers have been equipped with a uniform color code - the matching hardener to the coating can thus be determined at first glance, and the mixing ratio can also be found on the label. This virtually eliminates errors in processing.
