FNR: BMEL call for funding for bio-based additives

The German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has published a new call for funding as part of the "Sustainable Renewable Resources" funding program. Innovative approaches for the production of bio-based additives are being sought.
The new substances for the production of bio-based additives should replace fossil and, in particular, environmentally harmful and health-endangering substances, but be as equal as possible to them in terms of functionality and performance. The call for funding is managed by the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), the project management agency of the BMEL. The full text of the call is available for download. The focus of this call is on additives that have a comparable or better performance to conventional petrochemical additives. In particular, the aim is to substitute substances that are hazardous to health or the environment, such as phthalates. Outlines can be submitted until June 30, 2025.
Additives are additives or auxiliary substances that - usually in relatively small quantities - improve the processability and use of products or even make them possible in the first place. The new additives can be, for example, plasticizers, biocides, flame retardants or additives to increase water resistance or UV stability. The additives can also address new functional properties or applications. The main areas of application are materials, personal and home care products, lubricants, coatings and adhesives. Projects that deal exclusively with fillers and additives without functional added value are not eligible for funding. Important prerequisites for funding are sufficient participation from industry and development of the targeted additives to at least Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL 3).
