Evonik: Mass-balanced products for coatings and printing inks

Evonik Coating Additives launches Tego Wet 270 Eco and Tego Foamex 812 Eco, its first two mass-balanced products. These offer the same high-performance properties as conventional additives, but with a significantly reduced CO2 footprint.
The new mass-balanced additives Tego Wet 270 Eco and Tego Foamex 812 Eco from Evonik offer formulators of coatings and printing inks the same high-performance properties already known from traditional defoamers and wetting agents, but with a significantly reduced CO2 footprint. The raw materials, both organic and inorganic, used in the production of the additives have the biggest impact on the CO2 footprint of the final product. Evonik Coating Additives significantly reduces this footprint by using ISCC-certified raw materials and replacing fossil raw materials with renewable, mass-balanced alternatives. Through the mass balance approach, biologically or recycled raw materials are precisely allocated to the products. This provides a transparent way to reduce the consumption of fossil raw materials in coating applications. "With ISCC-certified raw materials, we help our customers to reduce their Scope 3 emissions and thus develop high-performance products with an improved ecological profile," says Tim-Frederic Sloot, Head of Sustainability at Evonik Coating Additives, who was responsible for the development of the first mass-balanced products.
ISCC PLUS certification ensures transparency
ISCC PLUS certification according to the mass balance approach ensures that the quantities of sustainable raw materials consumed and purchased are the same. This ensures maximum transparency for customers. The initial product portfolio includes the wetting agent Tego Wet 270 Eco and Tego Foamex 812 Eco, a versatile defoamer. The suffix "Eco" stands for "eliminate CO2" (CO2 reduction). Tego Wet 270 Eco is a highly active and versatile substrate wetting agent with a biocarbon content of over 40% (mass balance). It is characterized by excellent wetting properties and effective crater prevention. This makes it suitable for a wide range of coating applications, including aqueous, solvent-based and radiation-curing systems. In addition to its high effectiveness, Tego Wet 270 Eco has a low carbon footprint and complies with important food contact regulations. Tego Foamex 812 Eco, which contains over 60% renewable biocarbon (mass balance), is a highly effective and universally applicable defoamer for the grinding phase. It is suitable for both clear and pigmented formulations and is effective against micro and macro foam. Tego Foamex 812 Eco is the ideal solution for formulations that meet eco-label requirements and offers full food contact compliance. This makes it a sustainable choice for a wide range of coating technologies.
