After BYK Tongling, the integrated site in Shanghai is now the second production plant in China of BYK, a leading global manufacturer of specialty chemicals. The company has invested a total of a low double-digit million euro amount in the Phase II project (SCIP II).

BYK's new - almost 1.2 hectare - site in China is designed for an annual capacity of 4,750 tons. The entire Phase II project was officially completed on March 18, 2022, and the first container of the surface additive BYKETOL-OK for automotive and industrial coatings rolled off the production line on July 8. With the official start of project phase II, BYK is significantly expanding its production capacity in China in order to be able to offer customers a diverse and complete range of additives. These additives for solventborne and solvent-free, low-polarity and high-polarity systems, etc., are used in automotive, industrial, furniture, painting and architectural coatings, in printing inks and adhesives, as well as in thermoplastic and thermoset applications, among others.

"The opening of SCIP II is a significant milestone in our global growth strategy. Many global value chains have a broad base in China. And China is the decisive growth market for us in the medium and long term," explained Dr. Tammo Boinowitz, business unit manager at BYK. The expansion of BYK's additives production in Shanghai is just the beginning of BYK's development strategy in China. In the near future, the Shanghai site will be further expanded and optimized in terms of energy, and will gain in importance. As a pioneer in intelligent production operation, green factory solutions and innovative technology, the integrated site will have an intelligent manufacturing process with up to 85 percent automatic feeding. Here, the focus will be on the production of silicone additives with innovative technologies - with an annual capacity of more than 20,000 tons to provide added value to our customers.
