The 77th IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference took place in Rhodes, Greece in 2024. The event brought together experts from all over the world to discuss the latest developments and innovations in the field of welding technology.

Prominent speakers from industry and research presented their findings and discussed future trends in the industry at the IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference 2024. Almost 1,100 participants from 51 countries also had the opportunity to take part in workshops and networking events to deepen their knowledge and make new contacts. Overall, the 77th IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference was a complete success and helped to advance welding technology worldwide. The Greek Welding Institute organized and hosted this unique event for the first time, which covered areas such as industry and technology, academic research, education and training activities as well as qualification and certification. The Cyprus Welding Institute was involved as co-organizer. Dr. Roland Boecking, Martin Lehmann, Marvin Keinert and Philipp Loermann attended the 77th IIW Annual Assembly & International Conference on the Greek island to represent the DVS - German Welding Society, one of the most important partners of this global community.

At the General Assembly of the IIW, Dipl.-Ing. Martin Lehmann was accepted onto the Board of the IAB - International Authorization Board. He heads the "Education and Certification" department at DVS as well as the certification body for personnel, DVS-PersZert. He has also supported cross-institutional cooperation at national and European level for vocational training and further training in joining technology for many years. One of the main focuses of the DVS - German Welding Society is to promote young academics from the joining technology sector. This year, DVS sponsored 30 DVS-IIW Young Professionals, thus making a valuable contribution to the promotion of young talent as well as in the field of research. In addition, the Henry Granjon Award of the IIW in Category C: Design and Structural Integrity was presented to the German participant Aravindh Nammalvar Raja Rajan at the conference. Since 2021, Aravindh Rajan has been working at the Westfälische Hochschule Gelsenkirchen in the teaching and research group Materials Engineering and Joining Technology as a research assistant and developed a micromechanical simulation model to predict the fatigue behavior of friction stir welded hybrid joints made of AlSi10Mg, which were produced by additive manufacturing and casting.
