Umicore's Metal Deposition Solutions (MDS) business unit is expanding its product offering for the growing semiconductor market through the acquisition of its Chinese partner Shinhao Materials LLC. Shinhao focuses on copper plating in the advanced packaging sector.

Umicore expands its product offering for semiconductors: Umicore and Shinhao joined forces in 2019 to combine Shinhao's technical expertise and intellectual property in copper additives under the IntraCu product line with Umicore's global infrastructure and track record as a responsible supplier of high-quality materials technology.

Global demand for semiconductors is growing steadily, driven by artificial intelligence, increasing digitalization and rising demand for advanced packaging in industries such as automotive, telecommunications and consumer electronics. IntraCu is expected to benefit from applications in artificial intelligence (AI) and display substrates and will also produce at the MDS site in Germany to meet demand in Europe and the US. The newly established Umicore Suzhou Semiconductor Materials Co, Ltd (USSM) will be based at the state-of-the-art Shinhao research and production facility in Wujiang, near Suzhou. MDS's other research and production sites in Liechtenstein and Taiwan specialize in the manufacture of high-tech thin films for electronic and optical applications.
