ECS 2023: New silicone resin binders from Wacker for high-temperature-resistant coatings

At the next European Coatings Show (ECS) from March 28 to 30, 2023, Munich-based chemicals group Wacker will present two new silicone resin binders to trade visitors: Silres M 51 E and Silres IC 900. Both products are suitable for the production of industrial coatings that can withstand high temperatures.
Silres M 51 E is designed for the formulation of waterborne coatings, while the methylphenyl silicone resin Silres IC 900 is used for highly heat-stable thick-film and high-solids coatings. Both binders can be further processed into coatings that adhere well to metallic materials such as steel or aluminum after baking and, with suitable pigmentation, can withstand temperatures of up to about 600 degrees Celsius. Silres M 51 E is a functional methyl silicone resin that is finely dispersed in the form of very small droplets in an aqueous medium. Such a preparation is novel for application to metal substrates. Waterborne coatings in which Silres M 51 E is used as the sole binder achieve similar good properties to high-temperature coatings with solventborne silicone resin binders. The waterborne coating formulations dry quickly and have high chemical and mechanical stability after baking. After thermal exposure, they retain their color shade and hardly lose their gloss. Components coated with the water-based paint can be further processed quickly. Just fifteen minutes after coating, the surface is tack-free and non-slip.
Silres IC 900 was developed as a binder for solventborne coatings that withstand high temperatures. The methylphenyl silicone resin is characterized by a molecular structure that, when crosslinked, results in a tightly meshed network that still has a certain flexibility. This flexibility prevents cracks from forming in the cured coating layer, especially under thermal stress. Thus, Silres IC 900 also allows the production of coatings that can be applied in thick layers. Such thick-layer coatings protect the metallic substrate particularly effectively. Silres IC 900 can be used above all to reliably protect chemical plants and piping systems subject to high thermal stresses from corrosion.
