The Chemetall site Zhejiang Chemetall Surface Treatment Materials Co, Ltd in Pinghu, China, was recognized by the Pinghu Dushan Port Economic Development and Ecological Environment Bureau for its commitment to sustainability.

The Chemetall site was recognized for its pioneering role in the use of 100% renewable electricity through the purchase of green electricity and the installation of photovoltaic systems. This makes Chemetall a role model for other industrial companies in the transformation towards greater sustainability and CO₂ reduction. The Chemetall site, which has been in operation since 2022 and is part of the Surface Technology business unit of BASF's Coatings division, is Chemetall's largest production site worldwide. The use of 100% renewable electricity, including the installation of 2,500 m² of solar panels on the roof, is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 2,700 tons by 2025. This contributes significantly to the global reduction of Chemetall's carbon footprint and to achieving the ambitious sustainability goal of using 80% renewable electricity at all sites worldwide by 2025. "At Chemetall, we have set ourselves an ambitious sustainability target for 2025. Making a contribution to a greener future is a top priority for us. The use of 100% renewable electricity at our largest plant in Pinghu is a significant milestone. We are very proud that the Pinghu Dushan Port Economic Development and Ecological Environment Bureau has recognized our sustainability achievements. This is impressive proof of the effectiveness of our sustainability strategy," says Frank Naber, Senior Vice President of Chemetall.

Chemetall wants to reduce CO₂ emissions at its sites

"We are honored that the Pinghu Dushan Port government has recognized our transition to renewable energy in China. Sustainability is a key focus at Chemetall and is reflected throughout our value chain. This includes the use of clean energy sources in our operations and the development of innovative surface treatment solutions that help our customers achieve their sustainability goals. Our customers and partners in the region can expect even more from us in the future as we work together to drive change towards a more sustainable future," says Evelyn Shen, Vice President Asia Pacific at Chemetall. The company is committed to achieving its sustainability goals and is gradually implementing initiatives worldwide to exploit all potential for reducing CO₂ emissions at its sites. The aim is to continuously improve the carbon footprint in line with the sustainability goals of BASF and BASF Coatings. In the Asia-Pacific region, following the sites in Pinghu and Melbourne, Australia, Chemetall will also make greater use of clean energy in Singapore by the end of 2025 by installing solar panels to supply electricity.
