AkzoNobel with new water-based paint for car paint repair

AkzoNobel and its Sikkens brand have developed a new generation of waterborne basecoats for vehicle refinishing that can significantly improve the productivity and performance of bodyshops.
With Sikkens Autowave Optima from AkzoNobel for vehicle paint repair, only one visit to the spray booth is required, resulting in up to 50% faster process time compared to traditional basecoat application methods. This means that both energy costs and carbon emissions can be reduced by up to 60%*. The product's high pigmentation also ensures perfect coverage with just 1.5 coats of paint, resulting in material savings of 15% on average. "The development of this basecoat, which can be applied from a single source, is a game changer for the automotive refinish industry," says Patrick Bourguignon, Head of AkzoNobel's Automotive and Specialty Coatings business. "It is a response to many important challenges, including the need for bodyshops to become even more sustainable and efficient, as well as addressing the ongoing skills shortage."

According to the manufacturer, Autowave Optima is easy to apply and mix and can be used for any type of repair in any climate. When combined with AkzoNobel's portfolio of premium fast-drying fillers and clearcoats, the new basecoat can further enhance system performance while meeting the highest OEM quality standards. Bourguignon adds: "The launch of this new generation of products demonstrates our focus on understanding our customers' needs and delivering the best solutions - both now and in the future - to support the productivity and performance of bodyshops." The company's researchers, scientists, technical and sales teams have developed, tested and refined the new basecoat together with selected customers of the Sikkens and Lesonal brands. It will be launched in selected markets worldwide in the coming months. AkzoNobel is known in the automotive industry for delivering high quality coatings using the latest technologies.
