BASF Coatings has successfully commissioned a state-of-the-art production plant for automotive coatings at its Münster site. The new plant is designed for the production of so-called high-runner products - i.e. paints that currently account for the majority of market demand.

The investment in a new production plant for automotive coatings represents a strategic milestone for BASF Coatings and underlines its long-term competitiveness in the high-volume coatings segment. The advanced automation of the plant enables more sustainable operation and at the same time increases process stability and reliability. It ensures a consistently high quality of the coatings and increases the efficiency of the production process. The new production facility is one of the most significant investments made by BASF Coatings in the past five years. From the initial concept studies in 2019 through two and a half years of construction to the current start of production, the project was shaped by the expertise of the BASF Coatings teams.

BASF automotive series paint plant optimizes energy consumption

"Our innovative strength and our striving for continuous improvement make us a successful player in the market - and above all a valued partner for our customers," emphasizes Uta Holzenkamp, President of BASF Coatings. "This project is an outstanding team effort, coordinated and implemented by a global network of experts at various BASF sites." "With the new plant, we have invested in a more advanced process that ensures high and consistent product quality and stability. This allows our customers to benefit from our expertise and experience," adds Nils Lessmann, Senior Vice President Global Operations Paint & Resin. "As a next step, our teams in Asia-Pacific and North America will adopt these best practices and further strengthen our global production network." The new plant is designed to optimize energy consumption and thus reduce CO₂ emissions - another important step towards greater sustainability at BASF Coatings. Since 2022, the Münster site has been operated entirely with renewable wind energy, saving around 4,000 tons of CO₂ annually. Münster thus joins the group of other BASF Coatings sites in Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America that operate with 100% renewable electricity.
